Area Agencies Brace for This Week's Winter Weather

Posted: Updated:

The Tulsa Area Emergency Management Agency is in touch with about 90 partner agencies to plan for this week's winter weather.

"Here in the emergency operations center, we'll really just monitor things and monitor power issues, you know, travel issues," said TAEMA Director Roger Jolliff.

Jolliff said for now, agencies will remain in charge of their own operations. He said current models call for a couple of inches of snow in Tulsa County early this week and a couple inches near the end of the week. He said agencies are constantly communicating via email in advance of the storm. He said there are three TAEMA staff members that will monitor the storm's status and possibly coordinate efforts if the situation worsens.

City crews spent Monday preparing equipment and staff for the winter weather.

"Just go through it to make sure everything's ready to roll by midnight," said Operations Manager Leon Kragel. He said there will be 60 workers helping clear city streets.

Kragel said the city used about 1,600 tons of salt between Sunday and Monday. He said there is about 9,500 salt available for use this week. There are also additional orders for salt in the works.

The city said in a statement that road crews will work 12 hour shifts. There are 35 routes totaling about 1,768 lane-miles.

ODOT told Channel 8 there are 42 trucks and many other workers monitoring the winter weather. A spokesperson said she does not anticipate there will be many breaks between weather systems. ODOT asks that drivers use extreme caution in construction zones. The agency urges drivers to pay attention to plows. Also, ODOT wants to remind drivers that construction zone lanes can be narrow, and it can be difficult to correct yourself if you slide.
