For the month of February, the Tulsa Police Department's Mingo Valley traffic unit will be cracking down on seat belt enforcement, whether it's an adult wearing a seat belt or a child restraint.

The Mingo Valley division will be randomly monitoring areas and citations will be handed out when seat belts are not in use.

A citation for not wearing a seat belt is $20 and the citation for not having a child properly fitted and restrained is $25, according to Leland Ashley, TPD spokesperson.

No warnings will be issued.

Ashley emphasized that the chances for severe injuries and ejection are greater when seat belts are not employed.

"The main focus is to create a safer environment for drivers in Tulsa," Ashley said.
