CVS to Stop Selling Tobacco Products by October

Posted: Updated:

The nation's second-largest drugstore chain says it will stop selling cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco.

CVS Caremark announced today that it will phase out sales of tobacco products at its drugstores nationwide by Oct. 1. CVS says the move will help expand its work with doctors, hospitals and other care providers to improve customers' health.

According to a report from the Associated Press, President Barack Obama added in a statement that the new policy "will have a profoundly positive impact on the health of our country."

Obama says CVS is setting a "powerful example," and says the decision will help his administration's efforts to reduce tobacco-related deaths and disease and bring down health care costs.

CVS and other major drugstore chains have been adding clinics to their stores and expanding their health care focus for several years now.
