More Than 2,000 Acres Burned Near Ochelata

A grass fire in Ochelata that has scorched more than 2,000 acres is more than 99 percent contained according to a fire official.

Kary Cox, Washington County Emergency Management Director, said the blaze may have been started by windy conditions causing power lines to arc.

No injuries or damage to homes have been reported.

Crews were made aware of the fire before noon. It was located at Road 2600 and Road 3930.

Ochelata Fire Department was assisted in the attack by several area fire departments including the Washington County Volunteer Fire Department and crews from Avant and Ramona.

After noon firefighters began the backfire process and worked to put out hotspots.
