Justin Gilbert Impresses At NFL Combine

Posted: Updated:

Former Cowboy cornerback Justin Gilbert showcased his skills today at the NFL Combine, highlighted by the fastest 40-time of all the defensive backs at an official time of 4.37 seconds.

The Huntsville, Texas native received an overall grade of 6.3 on NFL.com, which is described as a prospect who “Should become instant starter.” In the past five seasons, only four other defensive backs have run a faster 40-time than what Gilbert did today.

A standout cornerback who was a consensus All-American and Jim Thorpe Award finalist, Gilbert also finished tied for third overall among defensive backs with 20 reps of 225 pounds in the bench press.

Gilbert’s career at Oklahoma State included a Big 12 record six career kickoff returns for touchdowns, just one shy of the NCAA record; a sophomore season where he picked off five passes including balls thrown by first round NFL Draft picks Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Ryan Tannehill; and a senior season where he tallied seven more interceptions, which was just one short of the national lead last year.

After his impressive performance today, Gilbert looks to improve his numbers at the Oklahoma State Pro Day at Boone Pickens Stadium next month. The NFL Draft will begin Thursday, May 8, at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
