Initiative Seeks to Improve Bicycle, Pedestrian Safety Across Tulsa Metro

Posted: Updated:

A new effort to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety across the metro will kickoff in downtown Tulsa.

Organizers of the Tulsa Regional Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan are schedule to begin the event's open house at 5:30 p.m. over at TCC's Center for Creativity.

According to a release from INCOG, the plan seeks to identify projects that will improve pedestrian and bicycle safety in communities like Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Sand Springs, Coweta and Jenks among others.

"By focusing on creating safe bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure for people of all ages and abilities, we will improve the economic competitiveness and health of our region," INCOG Transportation Projects Coordinator James Wagner stated.

Tulsa Police told KTUL Tuesday that in 2013, fourteen auto-pedestrian accidents were reported across the metro. In November 2013 one of them involved a two-year-old boy hit and killed by a vehicle at 61st and Peoria.

Accidents like those are just one of the reasons organizers came up with the initiative, also known as the "GO Plan." They also hope that it will allow the region to become more competitive when looking for pedestrian and bicycle funding.

"Our goal is to connect neighborhoods to the extensive trail system we already have so you won't need to get in a car to access a trail," said Wagner. "This will hopefully encourage more people to be active or even choose a new way to travel around town."
