Large Wildfire Near Dewey

Posted: Updated:

"We really don't know where it started or how it started," said Dewey Fire Chief Dale Little, his men fanned out across a wide area to try and keep pace with a fire that's had a voracious appetite.

"About 1,500 acres is just an estimate, but that's pretty close I'm sure," he said.

Some of those acres came awfully close to the homes of the LaSpasi family.

"It usually does this every few years," said Joe. He and his neighbors have established a network of do it yourself firefighting equipment to keep the flames at bay. They've seen what can happen if the fire gets the upper hand.

"Back in '90 the house up on the hill, beautiful house, burnt down because of this very, right here," he said.

Down the street, just across the road from where firefighters established the dividing line…

"A couple of years ago the north pasture burned," said Becky Reynolds, keeping one eye on the fire and another on her house.

"So I plugged my sprinkler system in and I watered the front part of the house an the yard just in case it would cross," she said.

By the end of the day, large columns of smoke continued to fill the air, but firefighters had a large plus column of no structures damages.

"That's a big plus, we haven't lost any buildings," said Chief Little.
