Cowgirls Headed Back To NCAA Tournament For Second-Straight Year

Posted: Updated:

For the second year in a row, Oklahoma State’s women’s basketball team secured a spot in the NCAA Tournament field it was announced tonight.

The Cowgirls will be the No. 5 seed in the South Bend Regional. OSU will face 12th-seeded Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday at 11 a.m. (EDT). The contest will be televised by ESPN2 with a spot in the second round against the No. 4 seed Purdue and 13th-seeded Akron winner on the line.

"There was a little bit of anxiety going there, but we were very excited to make the tournament. We're playing a good (Florida) Gulf Coast team. Everybody at this level is good, so we're fired up and ready to play. We had a good turnout here and I know our fans are excited as well," OSU head coach Jim Littell said.

The Cowgirls will bring a 23-8 mark into NCAA play, while FGCU, the Atlantic Sun Conference champion, stands at 26-7 on the year.

OSU is 8-11 all time in the NCAA Tournament after reaching the second round a year ago. TheCowgirls have advanced to the Sweet 16 on two occasions, making runs in 1991 and 2008.

"I think it's like a sigh of relief. Now we know we're going and we can focus on preparing for our first game. Seeing all the other teams get announced before us kind of made some anxiety build inside, but we're fine now and ready to go,” OSU senior Tiffany Bias said.

This year’s NCAA appearance extends OSU’s school-record string of postseason bids to eight. The Cowgirls made NCAA appearances in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2013. OSU participated in the WNIT in 2009 and 2011 before winning its first-ever WNIT title in 2012.
