South Tulsa Homeowner Fires Shots at Burglars

Posted: Updated:

Tulsa Police are investigating a burglary where a homeowner feared for his safety and fired gunshots at two alleged crooks.

It happened just before 5 a.m. in a South Tulsa neighborhood near 68th and Harvard.

Police said a man heard his burglary alarm system trigger and went into his garage to assess the situation. He found two burglars there and felt threatened. He fired shots at the suspects, but police do not believe he injured either person.

A 30-year-old male suspect fled on foot, but the homeowner was able to hold a 16-year-old female suspect at the scene until police arrived and arrested her.

The homeowner was not injured.

Next door neighbor, Amy Hoagland, heard the gunshots and called 911. She said the neighborhood has seen an increase in crime in the past couple years.

"I opened my window ajar to see if I could hear anything, and I heard my neighbor's voice, you know, 'What were you doing in my garage and stay still and get down on the ground, get down on the ground.' I was like oh my god, this is bad," Hoagland said. Some of the street's residents have been in communication since the incident, and she is relieved to report that her neighbor is okay.

"We generally discourage people from taking direct action against burglars for obvious reasons. There is a safety hazard. Here, fortunately, the homeowner was not injured as a result of this incident. We prefer that people observe, call us, and take measures to protect themselves," said Sgt. Malcolm Wightman.
