Tulsa Area Prepares for First Severe Weather Threats of Spring Season

Posted: Updated:

The Tulsa area is preparing Tuesday for the possibility of severe weather this week. A local storm shelter company says it has seen more sales this year than last.

New Day Tornado Shelters reports that March sales were record setting. This spring season follows a particularly devastating series of storms in 2013, including Moore, Shawnee, and El Reno.

"It's about security. Not just the physical protection, but how you feel about it, and really, this rattles people," said New Day owner Dirk DeRose.

Tulsa Area Emergency Management Agency Director Roger Jolliff said he does not want Tulsans to feel complacent, even though no major tornadoes have damaged Tulsa in recent years.

TAEMA reports that about 60 sirens are being replaced and upgraded between 2013 and 2015. Crews are working on about 20 of those currently.

TAEMA reports Tuesday that all sirens are functioning properly. They encourage people to listen for warnings this spring season and act accordingly.

In the meantime, Jolliff suggests residents pack a go-bag with "any prescription medication, extra glasses, change of clothes, toiletries, some food, water, those things you want to have very close to you," in case you need to take shelter.
