Jenks School District Holds Annual Emergency Drill

Posted: Updated:

Residents in Jenks should not be concerned if they see heavy police presence around the school district throughout the morning.

That's because officials with Jenks Public Schools are holding their annual drill Thursday simulating a school shooting. This year the event is taking place over at the Central Campus in the Sooner Building.

"Past exercises have included terrorist activities, plane crashes, the abduction of a school bus, campus evacuations/reunifications and hazardous materials release," according to the release from JPS. Officials have been doing this exercise for the past thirteen years.

Administrators stated that their goal for the exercise is to identify any issues before a situation like an active shooter may take place on campus. Firefighters, police officers and paramedics will be on hand for the exercise.

Events like the five active shooter incidents that took place in January 2014, are often considered when planning these emergency exercises. This year’s exercise is designed to test new procedures involved in dealing with an active assailant.

"These exercises are carefully coordinated to ensure the safety of all participants, while at the same time presenting as realistic emergency situation as possible," the release added.
