Emergency units helped rescue a 16-year-old male stuck on the Arkansas River east of Sand Springs Thursday afternoon.
Crews with the Sand Springs Fire Department were notified around noon after receiving word from residents nearby about a person in the river. This was east of the Highway 97 bridge.
“Apparently, he took a small rowboat from the Sand Springs Sand and Gravel Co. and started rowing down the river,” Mike Murphy, with the home, told the Sand Springs Leader. He abandoned the boat after it became lodged on a sandbar but was stranded waiting for help.
With the assistance from the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office, firefighters were able to remove the teen from the river. No injuries were reported.
Officials with the Boys Home added that the incident will be handled administratively. A comprehensive review of his placement at the home will be conducted.
