New OSBI Technology Helps Solve Cold Case

Posted: Updated:

Recently the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation helped solve a 17-year-old Wisconsin rape and homicide cold case thanks a new and improved fingerprint identification search system.

In 1997, Wisconsin authorities requested that all states search prints from a plastic bag that was used to suffocate a 14-year-old girl in a rape and murder. There had been no match until the OSBI had access to their new Next Generation Identification Increment 3 system (NGI).

The new technology matched with a Chicago man who had not been considered in the girl's rape and murder, his fingerprint was only in the system for a minor offense.

Wisconsin officials were alerted and then they collected the suspect's DNA from a cigarette butt, which matched DNA from the crime scene.

James P. Eaton, 36, was arrested by the Racine County, Wisc. Sheriff's Office earlier in April and is being held on $1 million bond on complaints of first degree murder and hiding a corpse.
