Creek County Commissioner Charged with Six Counts of Embezzlement

Posted: Updated:

An investigation continues this week after a Creek County Commissioner was taken into custody for reported embezzlement.

Agents with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations arrested District 2 Commissioner Rick Don Stewart this week for six counts of embezzlement. Officers were notified of the criminal activity earlier this week after it was revealed that Stewart may have used county equipment to upgrade a road near his property and to maintain his property.

KTUL learned that the alleged activity began last year when Stewart went before the Creek County Commissioners last year to request money for upgrades to a road near the home of a special needs child. This was in order to make it easier for a local school bus to pick up and drop off the child at his driveway, according to the release from OSBI.

Commissioners and the Creek County District Attorney's Office gave the green light for the project. But Stewart reportedly never informed them that his own property was near the area of the proposed upgrades.

"When the project was completed in January 2014, the overwhelming majority of the work done was on a road 1/4 mile west of his property rather than the road requested for the special needs child," the release described.

OSBI added that a neighbor in the area provided photographic evidence of Stewart using the county equipment to mow and clear up his property.

Court documents reveal that during an encounter with a road foreman Stewart stated he didn't care if he was re-elected. He allegedly stated the only reason he ran was to fix the road near his property.

Stewart was arrested Wednesday afternoon during a traffic stop near highway 117 and Wickham Road in Sapulpa on a warrant for six counts of embezzlement. Bond was set at $50,000. He bonded out later in the day.
