Parents and Experts Weigh In Following Teacher's Molestation Arrest

Posted: Updated:

Parents remain shocked Friday, following the arrest of a sixth grade teacher at Thoreau Demonstration Academy for molestation.

Brian Drabek, 41, faces four counts of lewd molestation of a minor. He is a science and math teacher. The accusations stem from alleged contact and inappropriate texting with a 12-year-old student who is in two of his classes.

Some of the contact reportedly happened in a classroom. Also, a police report suggests Drabek admitted to picking the student up and driving her to his home.

Channel 8 spoke with the parent of an eighth grader who has had class with Drabek in the past. The parent asked to be identified as Robert.

"She thought he was a pretty nice guy. He used to joke with her because she's a tall girl, and he used to call her 'Shorty' being his size. You know, she never thought anything, I don't think so," Robert said.

Expert Patty Crisp at the Palmer Tulsa Women and Children's Center works in recovery. She said most cases of addiction have ties to molestation in the past.

"When the community says this a person you can trust, a child is extra vulnerable," Crisp said.

She said it is important for parents to talk with their children about interactions with other adults. She also suggests parents monitor their children's communications.

Tulsa Public Schools said it cannot comment, because this is a personnel matter. The district will continue to monitor the situation.

Tulsa Police are continuing to investigate. They encourage anyone with more information, or potentially knowledge of more victims, to come forward.
