Double Executions Planned for Men Convicted of Murder

Posted: Updated:

Two men are scheduled to be executed Tuesday at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester.

Clayton Lockett and Charles Warner will receive a new lethal injection formula Tuesday afternoon. This is Oklahoma's first double execution since 1937.

A report from the Associated Press states that this is also Oklahoma's first time for using the sedative midazolam as the first in a three-drug combination. Lockett and Warner have sued the state over the secrecy of its execution protocol.

Members of the Oklahoma Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty are gathering outside the prison to protest and hold a vigil in light of the executions. The group has stated that the refusal to disclose the origins of the execution drugs violated the inmates' constitutional rights to due process and freedom from cruel and unusual punishment.

"We at the Oklahoma Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty are disappointed and saddened that the Oklahoma Supreme Court is lifting the stays of execution," said Adam Leathers, OK-CADP co-chair. "These forthcoming executions are an affront to our decency and morality but are also evidence of our state's leadership using human lives to play politics."

Both men were convicted of murder back in the 90s. Lockett was found guilty after he raped and killed a 19-year-old woman during a home invasion.

Warner is convicted of killed an 11-month-old child in 1997.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
