Investigation Shows Plane Had No Fuel Before Crash

Posted: Updated:

Federal investigations released this week a preliminary report for a plane that crashed in Nowata County.

Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board disclosed their report Wednesday on the aircraft that crashed near the intersection of County Road 406 and County Road 5 north of Wann.

It was reportedly flying to Shawnee from Washington, Kansas. Deputies with the Nowata County Sheriff's Office and Oklahoma Highway Patrol confirmed that there were no fatalities after the crash. But three individuals did sustain severe injuries and were identified as Paul Woolard, Randy Watson and Ryan Bozeman.

NTSB officials began their investigation this week and discovered that the Beechcraft BE-36 was seen on radar "descending on radar without clearance" before the crash.

Air traffic control operators questioned the pilot about the descent who told them the plane was having engine problems, according to the report. Moments later the aircraft clipped trees next to an open field and crashed.

The second passenger told officials that the pilot had been attempting to divert to the airport in Claremore. Investigators determined after examining the airplane that there were no issues with the engine, but that the problem was there was no fuel in the fuel tanks.

Their report added that there was "no evidence of fuel stains on the airplane or ground and no odor of fuel."

All three men were taken to area hospital and are continuing their recovery.
