Quapaw Senior Class Still Taking Trip After Originally Donating Funds

A group of high school students in Quapaw will end up taking their senior trip after previously donating their funds to relief efforts.

It's been more than a week since an EF-2 tornado struck the community of Quapaw on April 27. It left one man from Kansas dead and the area in its path in rubbles.

Residents in the town joined together to begin the rebuilding process just as soon as the threat cleared. Among those were the Quapaw High School senior class that made the decision to donate $2,000 dollars for their trip to Dallas to the cleanup efforts.

QHS Principal Terry Tyree told KTUL that students wanted to give the money to Quapaw because it was the community that helped them raise the funds.

Tyree said that when news of their donation broke several organizations reached out to help the students go on their trip. Walmart, Coca-Cola and several local tribes were able to collect more than $3,000 for the students.

Schools officials are scheduled to meet Monday evening with the students to decide whether they are still going to Dallas or a different location.

Tyree said that they will most likely take the trip during the last week of school.
