Fallin Issues Statewide Emergency Due to Wildfires

Posted: Updated:

Gov. Mary Fallin has issued a statewide emergency and many Oklahoma counties are now under a burn ban due to wildfires that began Sunday. Outdoor burning is now banned for nearly half the state.

One death has been confirmed so far and many structures in Logan County have been destroyed due to the fires. Grass fires have been reported near Altus, Jennings, Keystone Lake in Pawnee Co., Seiling, Stillwater and Woodward. Total damage costs have not yet been released.

“My thanks go out to the firefighters and first responders who have been battling wildfires in several areas of the state,” said Fallin. “The emergency declaration allows state agencies to acquire resources that can aid in that firefighting effort.”

The state of emergency enables emergency purchases and acquisitions as the state tries to combat the wildfires.

“I’m asking all Oklahomans to be vigilant and careful and to do their part to prevent fires," said Fallin. "Anything that can be done to minimize fires will help to keep both our firefighters and the public safe.”
