Okla. Teen Birth Rates Still Among Highest in Country

Posted: Updated:

May is National Prevent Teen Pregnancy Month, and with that in mind, it is necessary for Oklahoma to see where it stands regarding the issue.

Oklahoma has one of the highest teen birth rates in the country and new data from the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy shows that teen child-bearing costs Oklahoma la taxpayers $169 million per year.

Oklahoma has the second-highest birth rate for 15-19-year-olds and highest for the 18-19 age division. As a country, the total child-bearing costs for taxpayers is around $9.4 billion.

"Other states are getting better faster than Oklahoma so we need to be making continued investments in good strategic programs that have a real impact in Oklahoma," said Heather Duvall who is the Director of Education for the Tulsa Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy.

Between 1991 and 2010, Oklahoma teen birth rates dropped by 30%. The rest of the country saw a 44% drop in teen pregnancy during that span. The 30% drop in Oklahoma saved the state $95 million in 2010 alone.

On May 15, 2014 there will be a teen pregnancy prevention workshop for parents and teens. The event is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. At Rudisill Library located at 1520 N. Hartford Ave in Tulsa.
