Firefighters Discover Marijuana Grow Operation After House Fire

Posted: Updated:

A house fire in an Owasso neighborhood late Tuesday evening lead officers to discover a marijuana grow operation.

Firefighters with the Owasso Fire Department were sent to the residence located in the 14000 block of East 101st Street North after receiving word that smoke was coming from the attic. Crews were able to quickly put out the fire but found a hidden room above the garage containing several marijuana plants during their investigation.

A release from the Owasso Police Department stated that firefighters notified officers of the "large marijuana cultivation system" located in the attic. When he was questioned about the discovery, the homeowner reportedly admitted to the illegal grow operation, according to the release.

"Officers recovered a complex hydroponic grow system, grow lights, over 40 marijuana plants, bags containing packaged/dried marijuana, scales, a loaded handgun and over $8000.00 in cash," the release added.

OPD placed the homeowner under arrest and sent their investigation to the district attorneys office. His identity has not been released at this time.

Officials with the fire department stated that the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but that faulty equipment in the grow room was possibly to blame.
