A jury trial process has begun for a 22-year-old man accused of breaking into a north Tulsa home and sexually assaulting an elderly woman.

Prosecutors charged Tyrone Woodfork with first degree rape and first degree burglary in 2012. He's accused of breaking into Bob and Nancy Strait's residence in 2012, severely beating both of them and also sexually assaulting Nancy Strait, who died from her wounds a day later.

Court records indicate that both sides in Woodfork's trial return to a Tulsa County courtroom Monday afternoon for jury selection. He has previously been given a not guilty plea on behalf of the court.

KTUL reported in 2013 that the District Attorney's Office would not seek the death penalty for Woodfork. Their decision was made decision stems primarily from the suspect's reported mental limitations.

“There was much debate within our office as to whether we should seek the death penalty on this Defendant because of the egregious nature of the crime and the age of Ms. Strait. But ultimately the fact he had a borderline IQ score, as well as other mental history, led us to our decision,” First Assistant District Attorney Doug Drummond said.
