Oklahoma’s Tornado Season is off to a Record Slow Start

As of this week, only five tornadoes have hit Oklahoma in 2014. That is one of the fewest number of tornadoes the state has ever recorded up to this point in a year. The last time we saw a low tornado count similar to this one was in 1963.

During a normal severe storm season, we average about 38 through the month of May and annually around 56. This year we have only seen one this month (EF-0 in Comanche County). The strongest tornado reported so far this year was Quapaw's EF-2 with winds around 120 mph.

So what’s behind the lack of severe weather? The ongoing drought, the lack of moisture especially over the western half of state is keeping the storms from forming.

This week our current trend doesn’t change-with a heat dome sitting right over us it will keep most of the state rain free. However, by Memorial Day weekend there are some signs that the ridge of high pressure will break down. The latest forecast models show an increased chance for showers and storms over the western half of Oklahoma.

Memorial Day and next Tuesday is when Green Country could see a chance for rain. We will be watching this system closely so keep checking back for updates.
