CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Spoleto will start Friday with the traditional shower of confetti on the steps of City Hall. Under the annual painted Spoleto banner, Mayor Joe Riley is set to kick off the international arts festival in style.

Spoleto is a 17-day festival and is celebrating its 38th year. It runs from May 23 until June 8th.

At Friday's opening ceremony, there will be welcome speeches and a surprise performance by a featured festival artist.

The annual cultural event is considered one of America's top international performing arts festivals.

Charleston's historic theaters, churches, and outdoor spaces will be filled with around 150 performances over the next 17 days.

Spoleto includes performances in opera, theater, dance, choral, bluegrass, and jazz music among others.

The opening ceremony for Spoleto Festival USA 2014 will start at Charleston's City Hall on Broad Street at 12:00 p.m.
