The Patriot Cup Celebrates Memorial Day

Posted: Updated:

Golf! One of the many freedoms we take for granted.  Except for today.

"We're going to have a great day out here. We're celebrating God and country with no apologies. We appreciate you spending your morning with us", Folds of Honor Foundation Dan Rooney addressing the crowd that showed up for the 2014 Patriot Cup.

The Folds of Honor Foundation celebrated Memorial Day with their 5th Annual Patriot Cup in Owasso this morning.  PGA tour professionals and celebrities were on hand to honor the men and women who have served our country in the military.

"Another man who needs no introduction. The most colorful. The most fun player and one of the greatest guys on the PGA Tour, Rickie Fowler.", David Farity of Golf Channel introducing Rickie Fowler at the number one tee box.

Fowler and Folds of Honor founder Dan Rooney got things started with a little showmanship.  They wore fighter pilot helmets to tee off at number one and they still drove it right down the middle of the fairway.

Memorial Day is an important day for Rickie.  He's humbled by those who fought for the freedom that allows him to do the things he loves.

"Being around the military here and guys that have been right in the mix and how much it affects them and how much it means to them it great. It opens your eyes for sure and it's made me appreciate it more and more every year." Former OSU and current PGA Pro Rickie Fowler.

"They give us the abilities to go out and do the things that we want to do as hobbies and for fun. If it wasn't for them we wouldn't be able to do it. I think we need to keep that in our minds at all times. Because we're really bless to live in this country and a large part to them." Former OSU star and current Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Brandon Weeden.

Country music star Derks Bentley says Memorial Day has a special meaning for him because his father served in the military.

"My dad was in the Army and served in World War II so, I'm always thinking of him at this time of the year. Being a country singer we meet so many solders and their families out there on the road. So it's special regardless." Derks Bentley, Country Music Singer.

Playing in Derks pairing was rock star Kid Rock.  While he gives off a tough demeanor he too has a soft spot for those who serve.

"What can you say about it. I've been fortunate enough to be asked to entertain them all over the world a lot of times. Like most people it's something that is near and dear to my heart. Whenever you can say thank you that's what you do." Kid Rock, Rock and Roll Star.

Patriots of all ages gathered today to watch some of the best play a game, but also to say thank you to those who provide the freedom that allows us to play it.
