Suspects Identified in Illinois River Vandalism

Posted: Updated:

At least one suspect will be questioned by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office regarding a recent incident of vandalism on Bathtub Rock along the Illinois River.

The two adult suspects were identified by Save the Illinois River (STIR) on social media. The CCSO will file a report to the District Attorney regarding a possible prosecution of the suspects.

The Nature Conservancy owns the property and declined to file a complaint.

The Oklahoma Scenic River Commission has removed the painted message and other graffiti from the rocks. The rocks suffered some damage through the impact of the cleaning process.

Ed Brocksmith on the STIR board of directors called the act of vandalism "senseless."

He added: "In my opinion, if these women are charged and convicted, they should be barred from Oklahoma Scenic River recreation areas for at least five years. They should be required to do community service picking up litter and washing away graffiti. They should be fined and they should have to compensate the OSRC for its labor."

The Shame on You fund created following the vandalism will be awarded to the person giving information leading to the arrest of the suspected vandals. The fund is now near $1,000. If the fund is not awarded, it will go towards covering the OSRC's expenses for cleaning the graffiti and other nonpoint source pollution control projects.

Fore information, call 918-284-9440 or email info@illinoisriver.org.

Donations can be made to the Shame on You fund can be made on STIR's website.
