Summer Meal Program Begins Next Week for Tulsa School Children

Posted: Updated:

A total of 71 schools and churches across Tulsa will be serving free breaking and lunch for children that may otherwise miss out on the meals.

Tulsa Public Schools will kickoff their annual Summer Cafe program beginning June 5. Any child under the age of 18 is welcome to drop by and receive a free meal throughout the summer break at a number of locations.

"Our nation has a long and impressive history of seeing that its citizens, especially its children, have needed food in order to thrive," a release from TPS described. The program here in Tulsa is a part of the Summer Food Service Program operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

President Lyndon B. Johnson began the program nearly 50 years ago in order to combat the "War on Poverty," the release adds. Previous reports from KTUL state that low-income children typically rely on school lunch programs throughout the year or else they face going hungry.

Some of the locations offering free breakfast and lunch include:

- Anderson Elementary: 1929 E 29 St N

- Bell Elementary School: 6304 E Admiral Blvd

- Daniel Webster High School: 1919 W 40 St

- East Central High School: 12150 E 11 St

For a complete list of locations check out the TPS website or call 918-833-6679.
