Family and Friends Gather to Remember 14-Year-Old April Montano

Posted: Updated:

Family, friends, and teachers gathered at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church on Monday to remember 14- year- old April Montano. April was killed last Thursday in a shooting on the Gilcrease Expressway. Her family laid her to rest on Monday and they said now they have a big angel watching over them.

While it was an emotional and sad day for everyone who was at the service, two of April's friends who we spoke to couldn't help but smile when describing the type of person April was.

"She was always happy and cheerful. She always made someone's day," said Lyric Manns, April’s friend.

Manns reminisces about the times she spent with one of her best friends April.

"I would describe her as a trustworthy friend. You could tell her anything without going off to someone else and telling your secrets," Manns said.

Just last week Manns and April were graduating from middle school. The thought of never seeing April again is something Manns is trying to accept.

"I can't see her anymore. I can't text her. I can't give her a hug or laugh with her or take pictures with her anymore. I just lost my best friend and that's one of the hardest things," Manns said.

April was not only a friend, but a daughter, a sister, a relative, a student and a classmate.

"My whole friend group they all knew her and their hearts are broken just as much as mine," said David Ware, April’s friend.

Everyone still can't fathom why a young girl with so much ahead of her, was killed in such a violent way.

"No one should ever have to go through something like this ever and it's just a huge tragedy that shouldn't have happened and it happened over something so stupid," Manns said.

After the funeral service, April's family followed the hearse to Rose Hill Funeral Home where April was laid to rest.
