Okla. Base to Shelter Children Crossing U.S. Borders Alone

Posted: Updated:

An Oklahoma base is getting ready to potentially house children who have crossed the southern border illegally and unaccompanied by parents.

In statements released today, both Governor Mary Fallin and Senator Jim Inhofe have expressed their concern with the decision made by President Obama.

Fallin stated the base must be prepared to house up to 1,200 children under the president's request.

Oklahoma legislators were informed of the decision by the Obama administration earlier today.

Fallin says they've been assured the arrangement is temporary, but she believes the decision shows that the Obama administration continuing to fail to protect the border and discourage illegal immigration.

"I am dismayed by what appears to be an endless cycle of illegal immigration, temporary housing and eventual amnesty for those who have broken our laws," said Fallin in the release.

According to Inhofe's release, the base could begin to see 600 children arrive as early as June 10.

"Our nation has an immigration problem and a national security crisis, but I don't believe the answer is for our military facilities to be transformed into a center that houses, feeds, and cares for illegal immigrants," said Inhofe. "This only encourages parents to send their children unaccompanied over the border and, with the average-aged child being between 13 and 17, it exposes our military facilities to unknown security concerns."
