Summer Reading Academy Begins for Third Graders

Posted: Updated:

Summer schools is off to a start for hundreds of third graders who scored unsatisfactory on their state reading test.

In Tulsa Public Schools, there are several elementary schools providing reading lessons to help third graders make enough progress to be promoted to the 4th grade.

Four weeks of class kicked off today. More than 800 Tulsa third graders scored unsatisfactory risked being held back, according to the Reading Sufficiency Act.

The summer academy is a chance for students to improve skills and retake the test in a month.

"We are hoping that a lot of them can make enough gains they can push them over. They are going to pass that different type of assessment and be able to move on to the fourth grade," said Natalie Hutto of Tulsa Public Schools.

Only 600 third graders enrolled in summer school. Others may have qualified for good cause exemptions to move ahead to fourth grade without remediation.

Tulsa Public Schools has the academy in various buildings across the district. Students are given access to school bus transportation.
