Investigation Begins After Spavinaw Officer Opens Fire on Suspect

Posted: Updated:

An investigation has begun Tuesday in Mayes County after a reported shooting resulted in an officer opening fire on another individual.

Initial information describes that the incident took place Monday afternoon in Spavinaw. The town is located east of Tulsa in Mayes County.

KTUL confirmed that the officer-involved shooting was a result of another shooting that took place in a neighborhood on North 447 Road. Witnesses stated that a female victim mentioned there had not been any kind of altercation. Rather, she said she was riding in an SUV with a man that pulled out a gun and shot her.

Emergency paramedics were notified and responded to the scene. One of the witnesses, Charmin Wright, helped provide care to the wounded female before they arrived.

But it was when an officer with the Spavinaw Police Department arrived that the second shooting took place. Initial statements describe that the man suspected of shooting the woman reportedly charged towards the officer when he was given verbal commands.

Wright told KTUL that the officer fired two shots at the suspect. He was struck at some point during the incident, but continued to attack the officer.

It wasn't until Wright's husband assisted the officer that the suspect was subdued and taken into custody. Officials with the Mayes County Sheriff's Office have not provided names or conditions of the individuals involved.

Further details are expected Tuesday afternoon.
