State Superintendent Race Gaining Attention

Posted: Updated:

The state superintendent race is gathering momentum leading up to Tuesday’s primary.

Two republican candidates vying for the position of top state educator have engaged in a high stakes competition.

Janet Barresi and Joy Hofmeister are attacking each other almost daily in political ads and press releases.

Between the two of them, they have spent close to $2 million in campaigning.

Education consultant Linda Murphy says citizens want stability when it comes to Common Core, the A-F Grade System and the Reading Sufficiency Act.

"I think the debate is good for the state. It's good for education. It's far better. We have these discussions and debate and look closely at these issues, than for something to be locked into place before anyone knows," said Murphy.

There is another republican candidate, Bryan Kelly and four democratic candidates.

Be sure to watch Barresi and Hofmeister debate Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on KTUL.com.
