Americans' Confidence in Congress at Record Low

A new poll out shows Americans' confidence in Congress is at an all-time low.

In the Gallup Poll, only 7 percent of Americans said they have a “great deal" or "quite a lot" of confidence in Congress as an American institution.

Gallup has been asking Americans about their confidence in Congress and other American institutions for 41 years.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the percentage of Americans who had confidence in their lawmakers was as high as 40 percent.

Percent of people with a “great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in American Institutions:

  • Military: 74%
  • Small Business: 62%
  • Police: 53%
  • Church or organized religion: 45%
  • Medical system: 34%
  • U.S. Supreme Court: 30%
  • Presidency: 29%
  • Public Schools: 26%
  • Banks: 26%
  • Healthcare System: 23%
  • Criminal Justice System: 23%
  • Newspapers: 22%
  • Organized Labor: 22%
  • Big Business: 21%
  • News on the Internet: 19%
  • Television News: 18%
  • Congress: 7%

The poll was conducted from a random sample of 1,027 adults and has a margin of error of 4 percent.
