Education Issues: Common Core

Posted: Updated:

Common Core standards made headlines during the legislative session and continue to be a part of the campaign for the State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Gov. Mary Fallin signed a bill earlier this month that will replace Common Core with a set of standards developed by the State Department of Education.

Tulsa’s Channel 8 asked Republican candidates Janet Barresi and Joy Hofmeister about Common Core during a televised debate.

Barresi said she used to support the Common Core, but has since changed her mind as the Federal government got more involved.

"The federal government hijacked Common Core,” she said.

Whoever wins the election in November, will be in charge of developing the news standards for Oklahoma students.

“The repeal of Common Core is an opportunity for us to restore standards in Oklahoma education,” Barresi said. “This is an opportunity for everyone in the state to tell us what you want your child to learn."

Joy Hofmeister said she supports developing new standards.

"We've wasted enough time with Common Core,” Hofmeister said.

Hofmeister said new standards need to reflect Oklahoma communities.

“It’s time to move forward with standards we can embrace,” she said.
