Wrong-Way Driver on I-44 Taken into Custody

Posted: Updated:

A man is in custody after leading Tulsa police on a low-speed, wrong-way chase on I-44 overnight.

The suspect has been identified as Lance Newsom, 46. Police say this is his first arrest.

The chase lasted for approximately half an hour and police say it began on I-44 near the 33rd West Avenue exit at 2:30 a.m. The chase, about 14 miles total, ended near 145th East Avenue.

Police say the driver's speed was usually between 25-30 miles per hour. Police were able to get in front of the suspect during the pursuit in order to warn other drivers he was heading the wrong way.

Police nearly had to give up the pursuit near 129th when the suspect nearly crashed into a tractor trailer. But police were able to deploy stop sticks, which deflated all four of the suspect's tires.

But he kept going, driving on rims, police say. Eventually the suspect crashed into barrier cables in the median near 145th East Avenue and was taken in to custody.

Newsom was booked on complaints of eluding, driving under the influence and resisting arrest.
