Group Sues Over Common Core Repeal

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A group of parents, teachers and members of the state Board of Education has filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the recently passed law that repealed Common Core education standards in the state.

The suit was filed Wednesday with the Oklahoma Supreme Court, and defendants include the state, the Senate president, House speaker and the Oklahoma Department of Education. The lawsuit alleges that the repeal of Common Core was unconstitutional because it gave the Legislature too much power in establishing the new benchmarks that would replace Common Core.

A spokesman for Gov. Mary Fallin says the governor remains committing to establishing new education standards in Oklahoma, regardless of the outcome of the court case.

A hearing is set for July 14.
