The Gateway market at Pine and Peoria is closing, but the community is hoping to rally to save it during the final weeks.
North Tulsa does not have many choices when it comes to fresh groceries, and Gateway is one of the few stores in the area.
Billie Parker was born and raised in the community and organized the meeting to save the store. "If we don't start owning things, our community is going to die," Parker says.
Parker says this rally at Lacey Park is an opportunity for a locally-owned grocery store.
The future is uncertain, but organizers are hoping to find enough investors to back a store, or to own a building outright to open up another market.
"If we don't do it ourselves to take care of the community, who will?" Parker says.
