Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – July 1, 2014 /MarketersMedia/ –

Tech startup eduPOW (www.edupow.com) is kick starting the launch of their ‘empowerment through affordable informal education’ platform with the announced of an Online Hackathon challenge. They are inviting authors, trainers and subject matter experts to create a course in 45 Days that should be priced either $5 or free, with seven different categories to choose from. The top selling author will be crowned as the Grand Champion, with the winner promised a 1% stake in the company.

Each contestant will be given 15 days to spread the word about their course to the world, and for every course sold, 50% goes to author, and 50% goes into a pool to be divided equally among winners across individual categories like Arts, Design & Photography, Business & Marketing, Technology, Health, Fitness & Sports, Crafts, Hobbies & Home, Music & Languages, and Self Help, Relationships & Lifestyle.

Speaking about his new initiative, Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer of eduPOW, Vince Tan said, “We are big believers of informal education, which is all about learning what you truly love and pursuing your passion. $5 is a very affordable price for people to learn their favorite course. We want authors to get thousands of students to learn at $5 each rather than 50 students paying $100 for a course. It’s a win-win situation in the long run as authors will still be able to make a good living from their knowledge and many more users will benefit from it. We didn’t want to create just another digital learning platform; we wanted to do the right thing.”

Speaking about what sets eduPOW apart from the competition, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer, Melvin Ng stated, “We offer much more that a video-sharing website that has a lots of videos, which is great, but my question is where do you start? There is neither a learning structure in place nor a social network to cultivate learning. We are the first in the world to incorporate a purpose-built social network and gamification as a part of the learning experience and to motivate it along with a great structure for course organizing and strategic pricing.”

Inspired by what Blake Mycoskie of Toms.com did, eduPOW has decided to embark on the path of education by tying up with public schools and libraries, where for every course sold on the portal, the same will be donated, so that users who can pay $5 for the full learning experience as well as those who can’t afford it can still gain access to knowledge.

There is also a referral reward program with over a 100 prizes such as iPad Minis, Amazon gift cards and eduPOW limited edition t-shirts to be won through a lucky draw.
