Area Groups Protesting in Tulsa After Recent Hobby Lobby Decision

Posted: Updated:

Several area residents are gathering outside a local Hobby Lobby this holiday weekend to protest a recent Supreme Court ruling.

Organizers with Planned Parenthood of the Heartland are scheduled to begin the protest Saturday morning at the Hobby Lobby near 51st and Harvard. Members of the Tulsa Interfaith Alliance, All Souls for Reproductive Justice and the Oklahoma Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice are joining the "Stand Up for Women!" event.

"Help in the fight for the right of every woman to make her own private medical decisions without interference from anyone - not her boss, not politicians, not the Supreme Court," the protest's Facebook page states.

Earlier this week KTUL reported that a 5-4 decision Monday ruled that profit-seeking businesses, like Hobby Lobby, can hold religious views under federal law. Their decision allows the corporation to opt out of the new health law requirement that covers contraceptives for women.

But White House press secretary Josh Earnest said the decision creates health risks for women. He said Congress should take action to make sure they get coverage.

"President Obama believes that women should make personal health care decisions for themselves rather than their bosses deciding for them," Earnest said. "Today's decision jeopardizes the health of the women who are employed by these companies."
