71st and Elwood Construction Project Wrapping Up

Posted: Updated:

The 71st and Elwood construction project is in its final stages.

One lane eastbound on 71st street is currently closed down as crews finish up by resurfacing cracks in the concrete. A section of Elwood is closed as well.

"Rush hour, it'll [traffic] probably back up to Tulsa Hills," said Project Manager Curtis Whalen.

The rehabilitation project on West 71st Street between U.S. Highway 75 and the Arkansas River has gone on now for approximately a year and a half. The project was originally prioritized resurfacing but crews wound up having to add turn lanes as well. Also, crews said the city delayed construction for about four months around the holidays, given the shopping areas nearby.

This is the same intersection where two construction workers were killed when a car rammed into them in March of this year.

Closures are expected to last through Thursday.
