Tulsa Mail Processing Plant Listed for Possible Closure in 2015

Posted: Updated:

A mail processing plant in east Tulsa is on a list of possible closures before fall 2015.

Employees at the U.S. Postal Service Processing and Distribution Center were told the news during a meeting at the end of June. The facility is located near 21st and Memorial and will either be closed or consolidated between January 2015 and October 2015.

"That will obviously hurt the community, hurt mailers, hurt advertisers," American Postal Workers Union President Charley Mose said. "Not to mention if you move 400 plus people out of this area with good paying jobs, it's going to hurt economically."

Officials at the USPS have stated in previous reports that budget cuts are forcing the closures. Mose added that at this point they are trying to determine whether the facility will partially close or not, but no answers have been provided.

Members of the APWU have been meeting with politicians to help solve the issues with the U.S. Postal Service. In the last three years, the postal service has lost an estimated $26 billion.

"We have a good track record in Tulsa," Mose said. "We've won many awards for being the plant of our size and doing our jobs"
