Monty and Beans On A Bacon Sandwich

Posted: Updated:

"Beans on a bacon sandwich?" asked Colin Montgomerie.

"No on the side." replied a volunteer.

"On the side? No! No! No! No! No!" said Montgomerie.

Food isn't the only thing on Colin Montgomerie's mind this week, as he would say, no, no, no, no, no, no.  He's looking to win just his second tournament ever on US soil.  His first came back in may at the Senior PGA Championship.  Now that he has finally broken through here in the States He hopes his good fortune continues this weekend.

"Yeah, I mean, in Britain we call that an overnight success, 22 years of trying (smiling). It was a delight to finally win the 72-hole stroke play event in the States." said Colin Montgomerie, "And especially when you see the top four that week, Bernhard Langer and Jay Haas and Tom Watson, when you see these guys just behind you, it makes it ever more meaningful when you do happen to win such a big event as that, as our US PGA seniors, and coming here gives me more confidence knowing it's been done before, so it can be done again."

Monty has been playing professional golf at the highest level since 1987 and this is the first time he's played at Oak Tree National.  He says it's a tremendous test for the worlds best.

"This course is all to do with the green work, the second shots in there. So it tests every part of the game. It tests your driving. And the greens are exceptional quality despite the hot weather you have here." said Colin Montgomerie, "So all in all, I think it's a great test of golf and one that could stand, as I say, the test of time. If you ever decide to bring the U.S. Open back here, or here, it would really stand the test. This is a great, great golf course."

Montgomerie is without question one of the favorites to win this weekend, but if it's not him he thinks another major winner on the Champions Tour has a great shot, German Bernhard Langer.

"He's as good as the German football team are (laughter), which is ridiculously good. Clinically I'd say the football team are; so is Bernhard Langer." said Colin Montgomerie, "Very well prepared; so is Bernhard Langer, fit as he is. All in all, we have someone there that we should be very proud of and someone who is dominating the tour right now."

Oak Tree National should dish up one entertaining weekend for the US Senior Open.  Even better than beans on a bacon sandwich.  First round action gets underway Thursday morning.
