Owasso Community Resources' Food Bank Feels Drain of Summer Vacation

Posted: Updated:
Owasso Community Resources is noticing an increase in people coming its food bank this summer. It means shelves are emptying quickly.

"We just have more family members coming in needing more food, because the kids are out of school, so they don't have their lunch programs going on," said Wendy Davis with the nonprofit.

The organization helped about 7,000 people last year. It offers job hunting assistance, help with bill payments, and donated food items to people in Owasso and Collinsville. Staff said they still receive food donations from some companies and another food bank over the summer. However, people generally donate less.

"A lot of people think about helping people in need during the holidays, during Christmas, Thanksgiving. It's a big push. But during the summer, kids are out of school, and so they don't have the benefits of meals at schools," said Owasso Community Resources Director Randy Cowling.

Owasso Public Schools said last year, 2,172 students received free lunches. 663 received lunches at a reduced price. There are 9,000 students total in the district.

Channel 8 spoke with a man we are identifying as "Michael," whose family utilizes the food pantry. He said he wanted to be sure he could feed his children while finishing school. His children receive free/reduced lunches during the school year.

Owasso Community Resources is asking for items like pasta and hygiene products to help families get through the summer.
