Moving On After Gateway Market

Posted: Updated:

With the grocery store at Pine and Peoria no more, area residents and retailers are reflecting on the impact of Gateway's closing.

"Yeah I used to shop there all the time," said Ezra Alexander.

With bags hanging from his bicycle, Ezra is still getting use to the new, longer commute for groceries.

"It'd be a lot easier you know I make trips for my mother out here over on Pine and Madison here," he said.

Also getting adjusted to Gateway's absence is Anntinette Aldredge, who works right next door at Jun's Beauty Supply, and who saw Gateway as an establishment to help keep out the ugliness.

"I hate to say it you know the, can I say that on TV, the drug dealers? And everybody else who, you know, didn't have anything positive to do but you know, we had something there like a positive establishment to aid the community.

But there's also news from the area that doesn't leave a bad taste in your mouth, in fact, it's down right delicious. The expansion of Sweet Lisa's.

"We are moving to a new restaurant, The Shoppes on Peoria," said owner Darell Alexander.

They'll serve breakfast at their current location and lunch and dinner at their new digs, a stones throw away from Gateway, where Darell enjoyed shopping.

"They had butchers on staff that you could get specialty items from," he said.

And while Gateway's loss is a blow to the area, Sweet Lisa's success is proof that business can thrive here.

"If you're fair and you have a good product, you know, the people will support you," he said.
